Kia Sorento 4x4

What's it like to drive? It's much better off-road than on it – where it is easily unsettled by bumps and leans too much in corners. If you're off down twisty country roads with a back seat full of kids, make sure they've got cast iron stomachs. The 2.5-litre turbodiesel engine has the muscles to haul a full load, without an insatiable thirst for fuel. It's quiet, too. Off-road the Kia Sorento is genuinely capable.
What's it like inside? Like the gun turret on a World War II tank, the Sorento's high seat gives a good all round view, so you should see the enemy coming. And if reinforcements arrive unannounced there should be no problem fitting them in - the interior space is huge, easily seating five with room for loads of shopping or holiday gear in the boot. Air-con, electric windows and CD player are standard, and you could probably coordinate the metallic finish with this season’s eye colours if you wanted.
Will it let me down? Our latest customer satisfaction survey revealed that Sorento owners were reasonably happy with their cars, despite transmission problems, and below average dealer service. Mid-2006 revisions added more robust cabin materials to resist muddy-booted onslaughts (dogs, children, boyfriends, the local Territorial Army group, that sort of thing). The standard safety spec is reasonable, with plenty of airbags and three point seatbelts in the rear.
Will it break the bank? Consider the space inside, and standard alloys, air-con, all-electric windows that are standard on all models, plus on XS and XT models leather, electric seat adjustment cruise control and sunroof and the Kia Sorento is starting to look like a bargain. Resale values aren't brilliant, but with average fuel economy of 35.8mpg and a decent whack off the list price if you haggle, you're not getting a bad deal.
