Volkswagen Golf Hatchback
Car Review

What's it like to drive? Like your favourite pair of boots, the Volkswagen Golf is classless, low-maintenance and great for any occasion. It's comfortable enough to cope with the worst town and country roads, but still composed and well-controlled if you decide to test it to the limit. Our favourite engine is the 1.4 TSI, which offers the best combination of power and refinement. All of the major controls are slick and easy to use, making parking and city driving effortless, and motorway driving a doddle.
What's it like inside? Just as well thought-out and easy to live with as the rest of the car. Visibility is excellent, and the minimalist dashboard looks good and is easy to use. Interior space is among the best in class, with ample room for four and enough space to accommodate three rear-seat passengers in relative comfort. Unfortunately, those spacious seats don't fold flat, but the boot is big and well-shaped so it shouldn't be a regular inconvenience. High-quality materials mean that even the cheapest S spec cars will feel upmarket.
Will it break the bank? It's not the cheapest family hatch around, but it is the best. Build quality is excellent, and there is a comprehensive level of safety equipment as standard, including stability control and a full complement of airbags. Running costs will be easily manageable and the Golf has some of the best resale values so you'll save more money in the long run.
