Great

* Capable in the mud
* Lots of space for passengers and luggage, leave the front to the chauffeur
* Turbodiesel versions shouldn't break the bank

Gripes

* Safety kit? What safety kit?
* Feels like a very rustic pick-up truck to drive on the road
* Basic models are exactly that
DriveDrive rating - 2 out of 5 stars
Engines are strong, but diesel is noisy, and on the road it's skittish over bumps
ReliabilityReliability rating - 3 out of 5 stars
Looks cheaper than it is, but the mechanical parts should be reliable
InsideInside rating - 2 out of 5 stars
Height only steering adjustment but well positioned controls
SpaceSpace rating - 2 out of 5 stars
Cramped up front, so call shotgun for the back seat. Boot is vast but high sill makes it difficult to load
SafetySafety rating - 1 out of 5 stars
Shogun might look tough, but it's vulnerable to theft, and the safety provision is pathetic
Standards and extrasStandards and extras rating - 2 out of 5 stars
Sunroof and electric windows are standard, but you'll have to upgrade for alloy wheels, air-con or leather seats
