Brighton lives up to its cosmopolitan reputation with hip hotels, cutting-edge shops, and chic bars. Its seaside location means you can enjoy a walk on the (pebbly) beach, as well as indulging your inner child in the arcades and funfair on the Pier.
Mellow stone and Regency architecture give Bath a classic elegance. Along with historical must-sees such as the newly revamped Roman Baths, there's fantastic shopping, plenty of great restaurants, and some very swanky hotels.
York is steeped in history and traces of Roman, Viking and medieval life can be seen at every corner. The Minster is a masterpiece and many of the streets seem to have changed little over the centuries.
The good news is that the shopping and restaurant scene is far from medieval, and art galleries, theatres and lively cafe culture should keep even the most 21st-century urbanite amused.
